I'm a graduating senior majoring in computer engineering at Texas A&M University (Whoop!). I'm from the Dallas, Texas area. I'm a Christian and attend church regularly. I first heard about Touched By An Angel when it first came out. I avoided it for a while thinking it was just another television show that disparaged Christianity. I was visiting a friend and she just happened to be watching that show. I didn't know what it was so I watched with her. It was the best show I had ever seen and showed God in a wonderful way. The episode was "Fallen Angela" and I haven't missed a TBAA episode since. The only one I haven't seen is the series premiere. I love everything about the show. I really love Roma's portrayal of Monica and her charming Irish accent. My one criticism would be that Jesus is not mentioned enough, if ever. But, I'll take what I can get. It is by far the best show on television and in my opinion, the best show ever. Looking forward to Sunday's ep and some list activity, April ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ April J. Test is received ok here. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Mar 1997 16:57:00 -0600 (CST) From: Di Sudduth To: tbaangel @ execpc.com Subject: Di Sudduth's Intro Hello Fellow TBAA lovers! Thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Di (or Diane) Sudduth, I live in St. Louis, Missouri. I have two black cats, tons of hobbies, and never enough time. To support all my hobbies I've worked as a computer programmer at Saint Louis University for the past nine years. I'm also a fairly picky TV watcher. I never seem to have enough time to do anything, let alone watch less-than-excellent television. My arsenal of programs every week are pretty much limited to Babylon 5, The X-Files, and TBAA. I'll also catch Early Edition if it's convenient. Other than those, if the TV is on it's likely showing tapes. I'm quite reluctant to add more shows to my viewing schedule and if I do choose to add a show, time restrictions basically dictate that I drop one on the current list. Anyway, when I first heard about TBAA, I dismissed any chance of watching it completely. I'm do not consider myself a Christian, or even a religious person. I'm not anti-religion or anything like that, I just choose to not view it as a part of my life, though I do my best to respect that a lot of other people value their religions. At the time I mistakenly thought that TBAA was only about God and that it would be preaching morals and goody-two-shoes attitudes and wouldn't be worth my time. I couldn't have been more wrong. Yes, the show is framed in the context of "God and His Angels" and uses a lot of religious example and metaphor, but it has a much wider interpretation for those who choose to see. I see TBAA mostly about love. Yes, it's about God's love, and those of you who are religious interpret it that way. I choose to not particularly believe in a divine being, but the power of love even from one person to another is also powerful, and we can see this every week on the show. I'm very happy that a dear friend sat me down and insisted that I watch a couple of episodes. She chose "Interview with an Angel" and "Till We Meet Again." And she even fetched kleenex. I've been hooked ever since. I know that many people on this list and who will join in the future are very religious people. They attend church regularly, know their respective holy books well, and consider their spirituality to be an integral part of who they are. To them, and especially to that very small subset of people who will post lengthy and frequent comments like, "Example X from TBAA just *proves* how wonderful God is and that it is *right* to belive in all of this, how could anyone not?!" I ask you to try to remember that there are people here who do not share your beliefs. I'm not saying that you shouldn't express your beliefs, I'm asking you to not assume that everyone here shares them or wants to share them. A friend once asked me why I watched TBAA if I wasn't religious. I replied something like, "I don't believe in Minbari and Vorlons, but I am a passionate fan of Babylon 5. I don't believe in Vulcans or Klingons, but I enjoyed Star Trek as a child. And I don't believe that a person can arrive on earth from Krypton and fly and have super-human strength but I've enjoyed several incarnations of the Superman story. Given all that, is it so unusual that I should like TBAA even though I don't believe in God?" I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't have a lot in common with people who don't (or don't admit they) make mistakes. Having "our" angels be fallible makes them a lot more accessible to us "mere mortals." >> Yes. I like the fact that TBAA isn't afraid to show angels struggling with faith and living. We not only identify with the characters in an episode, but we also identify with the angels. It's reassuring to know we can be as angels ourselves. One of the more powerful images in this show is realizing that we can only reach so far without God. We need his help the rest of the way. I am a long time fan, with past and present fandoms including (but not limited to): FK, SWoL, ST:TNG, ST:V, TBAA, XF, S&MK, B5, B7, RoS, B&tB, QL, TBAA, L&C, HL, DW, JetC, BonC..... (I still sometimes refer to TBAA as being rather like QL except that instead of "putting right what once went wrong", they're "putting right what might go wrong". *grin*) I also greatly enjoy Shakespeare, modern American poetry, costuming, sewing/crafts, Ren Faire. And Kevin replied: >(snip) By just mentioning "God", they encompass many >similar religions (Judaism, Catholicism as well as Protestantism.) I very much agree, Kevin. TBAA seems to me to also be inclusive of pretty much *all* positively-based religions--there is no real reason to assume that *any* religion with a God figure could not find common ground with the kindness- and truth-based precepts TBAA supports and presents. The fact that TBAA completely stays away from Jesus and the specificity of religion and doctrine that mentioning him entails has been and remains one of my favorite things about the show. This is what I believe allows TBAA to be accessible to a very broad audience--and there are so many people who can benefit from the show that I am glad that they are not distancing some by ruling out certain belief systems. I do want to mention that I absolutely believe the show does clearly have a Judeo-Christian slant, and that most of their imagery and the bits of doctrine, ideology, and specific belief that slip through are most often from the Judeo-Christian tradition. This makes sense to me in that Martha and the cast are Christians--of various flavors, to be sure, but all Christian--and in that this society is predominantly Judeo-Christian in cultural history, and using the ideas that will be most recognized is the best way to reach the audience. I am impressed that TBAA is so inclusive of variances in religious belief and practice; it is an attitude that I find refreshing and thoughtful. It is also, I believe, a reflection of the diversity amongst the religious beliefs in this country as well as amongst the cast and crew. Roma mentioned in an interview in the current _Ladies Home Journal_ (excellent, informative article, btw--worth reading in the store or buying if you're interested enough....also lovely pics) that, given her background and childhood in the religiously conflicted Northern Ireland, she would not be a part of anything that encouraged religious partisanism. She is very proud of the hopeful and religious tone TBAA sets without referencing specific religions. All imo fwiw, Amilyn --- I could confuse them to death; you know I could do that. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 1997 08:25:13 -0500 (EST) From: SunbirdSE @ .com To: tbaangel @ execpc.com Subject: TBAA ep with Chad Everette Does anyone know the title of the ep with Chad Everette as the pastor? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 1997 08:26:18 -0500 (EST) From: IDyeForYou @ .com To: tbaangel @ execpc.com Subject: Intro: IDyeForYou Hi everyone, I'm Susan and if you can't tell from my screenname....I'm a very prejudiced John Dye fan.
