First I have some business to attend to. Re: PL When plans were announced for PL in the summer of 96 under the title of Home of the Brave I had only one concern: Could Martha Williamson write and produce two shows without the well running dry? I was afraid that the quality of TBAA would suffer because MW was primarily concerned with PL. I think that so far TBAA continues to produce good shows ( although I must admit that Smokescreen did get a little preachy and did strain legal credibility). My complaint with PL is that it is very dull. The stories never seem to involve people. Then again, like the rest of us, I've only seen two or three eps. Which brings me to my point. Don't judge a series until you have seen every ep ( or at least a majority of the season. I know I, too, enjoy bashing dramas and especially sitcoms. I think that Promised Land has some promise. The cast is trying its best to portray the characters it is presented with. Martha Willamson is trying her best to create a series about people doing God's work. This show deserves a chance. Also, this show has been running for less than a year. Most list members have heard about critics panning TBAA in its first season. One critic said the show was "an example of why '90s America is the stupidest place on Earth". In fact, some critics were waiting for an avenging angel to push a certain red Cadillac convertible off a very high cliff.... Fortunately for us, the network was generous enough to ignore the critics and renew the series for two more years. I for one am glad they did. It is an inspiring show, and PL could be that way too, if TBAA fans gave it a chance. If you don't like the show, write to MW and suggest to her aspects of the show you want changed. BTW, if any critic suggested pushing a certain red Cadillac convertible off a very high cliff, he would probably recieve angry letters from TBAA fans telling him he doesn't know what he's talking about. Maybe he was >curious. He was a passenger in the very small plane in Groundrush (Poor dear looked rather crushed in that very small cockpit) Perhaps that's where he got his motivation. I wonderer if the angels try to totally avoid their angelic powers while on vacation. Monica could magically pick coffee beans, but I suspect that she relished every blister or scrape while picking them by hand. Perhaps Andrew just wanted to "be one of the humans" and fly and interract with everyone. The whole "the journey is just as fun as being there" kind of thing... Cute Andrew moment, while I'm on the subject, :-) I *loved*, when watching Homecoming Part 2, his little look heavenward just after the Thanksgiving prayer. It's the microexpressions I love, and John Dye is *perfect* with them. I could go on, but I'm sure that some of the AiAs could do a *much* better job. I've heard that there is actually a tape out there with just the Andrew footage on it, spliced from all the episodes in order. Must be interesting watching! I think. :-) Gee, Jennie, how'd you know this was me??? What Jennie said is *partially* what I'm interested in; it's always a curiosity to see how well the pitch and quality of the voice actor chosen to dub matches the original actor's voice. Sometimes it works *very* well, sometimes it *totally* doesn't. So I'm always curious about that. But there's also the curiosity of how the dubbing engineers go about giving indication of the differences in characters' accents. This I find especially interesting when a character's accent is an integral part of that person's character--like the characters on Designing Women, for example. In that case, do the voice actors speak German with an American Southern accent, or do they choose a souther region of Germany (Bavaria) or use an Austrian accent? What do they do when the accent is part of the character in order to give a certain impression about the character....for example, if someone on an English program has a Cockney accent, that is not just a matter of background, but an indication of class as well....is the voice dubbed with the Cockney accent, or a German/French (whatever accent) that has the same culture and social implications? I mean, does the German voice actor for Monica just speak German with an Irish accent? And do they give any indication of John's (slight) southern accent? That one would be harder since it's more subtle and occasional--he has more of the kind of slight/residual accent of someone who has dropped most of the accent deliberately, or of someone from a betwixt-and-between area (for example, I'm from southern Illinois, where we're not really southern, not really northern, but our speech will often reflect subtle hints of both regions). I think his is most noticeable in "The Sky is Falling" when Andrew is sulking about Halloween. The word "Tess" is not *normally* a multi-syllabic word ("Tay-ess"). *grin* Do they give any indication of Della's occasional hints of Detroit/black dialect? The best specific example I can think of this being, "The Angel of Death done killed my car!" I actually often wonder if the lines that end up with dialectical influences are *written* that way or if Della alters them as she sees fit. Okay. Linguistic mode off. Anyone with answers or comments would be more than welcome! Amilyn * ---- "Angels and ministers of grace, defend us." "Hamlet, Act one, Scene four." I had wondered that too, but Diane E., who first mentioned that she remembered seen Alice previously on TBAA, also distinguished between Alice and Estelle in either that note or a subsequent one. She remembered Alice playing a character *like* Estelle's, so I don't think she mixed them, unless she recognized the similarity and merged the two actors around the one character in her head. I've been re-watching the whole show and haven't seen Alice yet, and I'm 4 eps from the end of 2nd season, so I'm pretty sure she's not here, but I'm going to double check again somehow. :-) I do wish that she had been used a bit better; I've loved Alice since Esmeralda and would have enjoyed seeing her *do* something more central. :-) Anyway, hopefully someone will know, or we'll determine for sure she wasn't there. :-) Thanks for the correction on "Ghostl*e*y"....and "etiquette" was spelled right. Like I said, I have been rewatching the early stuff, and I had been thinking about commenting on exactly this. Roma always looked so *cute* sitting on rooftops. I especially liked the beginning of ....oh, dear, was it "Fallen Angela"? ...where she was looking from house to house along the street, sniffing what kind of coffee everyone was having for breakfast. *grin* I miss a lot of the culte "little touches" actually. And I think the quality of the writing is not as high; their words and comments don't seem to me to be as powerful, nor do they seem to affect me as strongly as a result. I can't tell if it's the splitting of Martha (and probably other staff members') attention, or the nervousness and unsteadiness typically caused by a show suddenly becoming wildly popular, or the shifting of the dynamic of the show with the introduction of first Andrew as a regular and now Celeste as a semi-regular, or a combination, or something totally separate. I keep hoping to get more eps like this season's "The Sky is Falling" and "The Journalist" (which are among what I consider to be the most excellent pieces of television they've produced), like "Interview with an Angel", "'Til We Meet Again," "Jacob's Ladder," and a handful of others that I believe are stellar pieces of storytelling.
