I was once asked if I could clone anyone, who would it be (not that I believe in cloning, but ...), betcha can't guess who I picked?! Of course I also said if I could clone him I'd want to keep him! My dream would be to someday meet John/Andrew, as well as the rest of the cast. I hope someday to meet some man as special as John/Andrew is. Until then, I'll just keep on dreaming, and watching TBAA of course. I have a question for you. How did you get the idea for a maillist and how did you get one started? I have been asked to do something along the lines of a maillist or a web page, but I have no idea how or what's involved. All I know is I have the capacity (both computer wise and ISP provider wise) to do these things. Especially if I go with this new company that I'll be trying out. The guy who owns it is practically giving me anything to switch to his service. MMMMM very interesting, don'tcha think? If that isn't the proper title, someone tell me what it is? Yes, I know this is a re-run, but it's also one of my favorite eps to date. One reason is that they're dealing with something besides the standard "generic Christian" background they usually use. Another is how well they deal with the conflicts between the archaeologist's science and the Navaho's traditional beliefs (even if they don't exactly get the latter right; they come really close, and they're obviously trying, which counts for a lot). So many good quotes: "You have Hebrew speaking Irish people working for you?" Hmmm.... Tess doesn't like heat. She also doesn't like cold, judging by "The Violin". So, what does she like? Air conditioning? Haven't they established, in earlier episodes, that only the people Andrew is coming for see him? And if I'm remembering right, then it's contrary to canon for Dillon to see him.... unless, of course, Dillon is seeing Andrew for a different reason. Zeda (is that spelled right?) talking to Monica under the tree is such a lovely scene. He obviously understands what's motivating his grandson and loves him in spite of Henry's stubbornness. "You try a stunt like that again, and that halo's coming down around your neck!" LOL! I love it when Tess gets annoyed. I also love that she recognizes that the Navaho Elder (Hosteen being the standard Navaho honorific for a respected man) is basically in the same position as Zeda. Those two really do have a lot in common, and the show points it out beautifully. You could actually make a pretty good argument for Dillon being a potential _Hatalie_ (Navaho healer), based on his seeing Andrew and having those dreams. And I really, *really* like that they're treating a non-Judeo-Christian religion as sensitively as they are. Dillon's joining his elders is such a nice moment. :) They do a really good job of parallelling the two young men coming to terms (or refusing to) with their own traditions. I also like how they puncture some common misconceptions, like when Tess asks if Hosteen Edison picked the tea himself, and he says he bought Red Zinger at the supermarket. They did such a lovely job of cutting between Henry in the cave-in and the people around the campfire. And Harold Gould did such a wonderful job of *showing* that Henry finally understood, without saying a word. "Oy, I'm getting cataracts now?" I like that. That's a perfectly believable response. And so is "You go into the desert, of course you see a burning bush." I like that Zeda's accepted that God will put things right with Henry in His time. For him to disbelieve would be totally out of character now. Lovely ending, even if I do know it's contrary to Navaho tradition to have all the elders standing around the grave like that. Traditional Navaho don't *do* that kind of burial. By Navaho religious tradition, all the evil Zeta ever did in his life (embodied in his ghost or "chindi") is hanging around the corpse-- and, more specifically, that cavern, which is why traditional Navaho prefer to die in the open-- and they wouldn't stay around his corpse any more than they had to. But it was such a lovely, symbolic ending that I can forgive them. :) This is TBAA as I love it. Multi-layered, sensitive, and uplifting. Diane E # "Hydrogen. She did okay singing in the ending of "A Joyful Noise," but her singing in this episode was enough to make dogs howl (kinda like in "Birthmarks" and Leonard barking). =) I'm looking forward to next week's episode. I think that Roma has a good voice, even for singing. It may not be very pleasant to some, but put her with a choir, she'll do fine. I still remember that show with fondness. They wrote it with balance. Judeasm, Navaho, and spiritualilty. They did not mention any other religion, but that is O.K. I think God is blind to religion, as long as we still hold Him dear to our hearts, minds, and souls. The traditions that were not accepted from the son seemed to me that we do that to God. God is Zeta, grandfather, fill in the blank. We are the archeologist. We think we know better, and we want to play in the dirt and dust to find, what? You focus on just the site, not the surrounding beauty, not the legends around you, not listened to the soft whispers of the past that your father tried to teach you. Nah, you just want to make a mess out of a place that was sacred with a reckkless regard and no past behind you. You want to know, but don't want to know. You think you know it all, and you label yourself as such. Zeta is besides himself as he sees you scrambling in the dirt, refusing his counsel, his concern. He wants you to know about life, history, heritage, about you. You shrug him off, 'cause you know better. Only when do you confront that which you seek does it humble you, humiliates you, brings you to your knees to face the truth. You thought that this was the quest you were on, but you now realize that you are way over your head. Isn't it funny when you scream at Zeta, or God, that you don't understand, you are frustrated beyond belief, that he comes with that with what you need: comfort, peace, solution, forgiveness, a kick in the pants, and a history lesson about you. I have to keep remembering these things, since I am the archeologist, in a way. Aren't we all? John C. I've been on this list since it first started, I think. I started watching TBAA the summer after the first season. As a result, There are a lot of first season episodes I haven't seen. My favorite episodes are "Reunion", "Jacob's Ladder", and "Fear Not". I enjoy reading all the posts to the list, but usually lurk since I don't have anything to add. I hope TBAA has many more seasons. God Bless, Dave Larson ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Apr 1997 09:48:33 -0500 (CDT) From: "April J. Monk" To: TBAA List Subject: Good News!!! I think she can do a decent job with singing as evidenced by "A Joyful Noise." She can also do a horrendous rendition of "Wade In the Water" as she did in the "Reunion" episode. That just shows what a truly great performer she is. --April ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ April J. I loved the part where Dillon's dead grandfather came to him in a dream. (John Weaver, I was thinking about you, too, when I was watching this; re the dream about your aunt.) The same thing happened to me 15 years ago. My grandparents raised me. My grandfather passed away in 1979. In 1982, I had a really vivid dream in which he came to my trailer for coffee. I could see him, touch him, and feel his arms around me as he hugged me. It was so real! I'm convinced it was God's way of comforting me, and letting me know my grandfather is in a better place. Back to last night's ep: as an official member of AiA, I was disappointed that Andrew had so little screen time. I'm looking forward to next week's episode. Playing an 80-year-old woman is really going to be a stretch for Roma/Monica, but I'm sure she'll handle it beautifully. . .I've got lots of confidence in the talents of our three angels! Hey, Darla. Are you a new viewer? When this was made, Andrew was a pretty shadowy figure, strictly the AOD. You could see in Monica's face that his appearance was not a happy thing. On another note, judging from the trailer it looks like next week's episode has truly serendipitous timing. I loved last night's episode, and I wanted to share what I liked best. First, I am always looking for similarities and patterns in what I learn, and I believe that finding common threads in religious traditions is the best way to help people learn tolerance of others' beliefs. I was struck by the comparison between what the Nazis did to the Jews and what the Americans did to the Native Americans. (The Native American "concentration camps" are not the only ones we Americans have been responsible for. We did something similar to the Japanese.) Second, I liked seeing Monica sing. Judging from the teasing from Della Reese that she described in the Oprah interview, Roma Downey doesn't have a "professional quality" singing voice. I do think she has a pretty singing voice, though, and I know that it takes tremendous courage to sing in front of people when you don't think you sing well. Who knows, though, Roma Downey may have more talent than you'd think from watching the Oprah interview. That's all I have to say for now, except to express my 100% (or more) support of a list meeting (especially if the cast, etc. from the show are present). Kevin A. wrote: <> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, Kevin. . . I began watching TBAA about mid-way through the second season. My viewing, at first, was sporadic; an ep here, an ep there. I had never seen "Written in Dust," until last night. The ep hit me pretty hard, as I had a dream-visit from my deceased grandfather, three years following his death. I'm well aware that Andrew (John Dye) was not a regular at the time, and that Andrew was strictly the AOD, and not a case-worker, too, as he is now. I'm just glad that the TBAA Execs recognized both John Dye's talent, and the appeal to fans of the "Andrew" character. As a bona-fide member of AiA, I'm sure that I speak for all of us when I say, Andrew is adorable, and I enjoy it immensely when he gets as much screen time as is possible. All the "angels" are great, but he is my favorite. . . :-) I'm sure all you men on the AngelList are something special, too, but the gentleness/caring/compassion of Andrew is very extraordinary. After all, he is one of God's holy angels, isn't he? I hope that when it's my time to meet my Maker, that God sends someone for me who ACTS like Andrew, and LOOKS like John! What a great combination!
