I for one couldn't eat a bite!! :) It's so great that the thought of putting a reunion together is getting such a positive response from everyone. I'm one of those several who would have to get real creative with the finances to be able to go, but one way or another I'd get there (wherever there happened to be). I feel having it anywhere but SLC would take something away from the experience. Don't get me wrong - it'd still be great, but I'd love to be able to see some of the places where my favorite show is filmed, and get a feel for what the city is like. I also feel our chances of being able to get together with the cast are best in SLC. One more thing, I think we should keep it pretty small; a convention just seems too impersonal. The fewer people we have, the more personal the weekend could be. It's beginning to feel like less and less of a longshot every day! As for hearing John/Andrew sing - it would be the most beautiful music ever made! :) I'm not a classical music fan, but I'm sure I could learn to like it coming from him. Hey AiA, if the reunion ever comes to pass, maybe we could get him to sing something for us!! I'd melt - anyone else? I think all of this planning sounds like a wonderful idea, but I do want to add a note of caution to it all. While it is very neat to dream about talking to and bonding with the cast of the show, realistically we can't expect anything with the cast and/or crew to happen if we all head out there. We have to remember that this is a top ten show - which means millions of people watch it. We have no right to expect that out of those millions, *we* should be blessed or lucky enough to get to meet everyone just because we headed out there. I know Oprah referred to TBAA as an 'open set', but I have repeatedly heard in the past that it is a closed set. I tend to think that what Oprah meant and what 'open set' usually means are two different things. Traditionally, from what I've heard, an "open set" is one where you can basically call up ahead of time and ask to visit, and if it's not inconvenient for them they will arrange to let you watch them film provided you keep out of their way. I'm pretty sure this isn't the policy on TBAA. It's *rarely* the policy on any network show that is doing anywhere near this well in the ratings. I'm therefore inclined to think that Oprah's use of the term was to indicate that it is a *friendly* set. You'll notice that the fans we saw were approaching while they were filming on location. Chances are good that they were fans who happened to be in the area while filming was going on, rather than someone who called ahead of time and was *told* where to go. I've seen filming on location before - it's a lot easier just to let people who happen upon you watch than to try to get them to go away, if they aren't causing trouble. And I *do* think TBAA *is* an open, friendly set (in that sense of the word). However I don't think it would be a good idea to head down to SLC and case the area looking for location filming. That would be a scary thing to do, and the last thing we want to do is be scary. *I* would hide from fans who were acting that scary. :-) Before anyone protests, I am the *last* person to say anything is impossible. I'm only pointing out that the proposed scenarios would be quite improbable. I also realize that some of the posts were made as dreams or jokes, but it's not entirely clear in all of them that this is the case so I wanted to make sure everyone here was aware of the above. All of this *is* actually leading up to something - how much interest is there in this trip if we *can't* meet with any of the cast or crew of TBAA? I would still love to meet y'all, and there are lots of fun things we could do down there. (Including drinking mocha latte!) I would love to see the Great Salt Lake, and head up into the mountains for a hike, for instance. And there is a lot to see and visit right in the city. Anyhow, those are my thoughts on the subject. :-) Take care, Jennie ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Apr 1997 23:39:17 -0400 (EDT) From: deelady @ . .addy..com To: tbaangel @ . .execpc.com Subject: Reunion finabair wrote: >>While it is very neat to dream about talking to and bonding with the cast of the show, realistically we can't expect anything with the cast and/or crew to happen if we all head out there. My idea would be to set up our meeting (I still prefer SLC, for the same reasons as you, as well as it being the "home" of TBAA), and invite the cast and crew to come and meet all of us, that way there is no pressure on them or the production company to "host" us. We would then be "hosting" them. Nothing formal like a convention type style, just like a good old fashioned family (which, in a way, we are!!) reunion. Meeting the cast and crew of TBAA has always been (and probably always will) be a huge "fantasy" of mine. So I'll just keep praying that someday that fantasy comes true. And if God "happens" to join it with a "family reunion", so be it. But this is all MHO :) Until later. It made me realize that TBAA reflects God's love without actually saying it's a Christian thing. That's good. A show that accepts the diverse beliefs of our world without favoring one over the other is a lesson a lot of people could use, including some religious leaders. Who can say that you can't get God's love if you don't accept certain beliefs? After all, isn't God's love unconditional? That's what Monica and Tess are trying to tell us. In an earlier post of mine, I wrote that I'd like to hear a duet with Andrew and Tess, an old-time gospel song, at the bedside of some person who was dying, as Andrew was getting ready to escort that person to heaven. What a tear-jerker! (Since John is trained in Classical/Jazz, I don't think Gospel would be that hard for him to do. If he's been trained vocally, I'm sure he could sing gospel.) I sing too, (mainly country-rock), and it doesn't seem like gospel would be as hard to do as classical or jazz. I've never tried to sing jazz however; I think both jazz and classical would present more of a challenge for me. I've had some, but very little, formal training. It is a scary thing. You don't know for sure what the person is like even while you are talking to them in person. Also another thing that has been a tad irritating about the most recent posts, is the surge of Andrew popularity. Yes, John Dye is attractive; that's a given; that's part of the appeal of the "Andrew" character, but a very small part. The major appeal of Andrew is his gentleness and compassion. (IMHO God expects that from all of us.) The producers saw fit to make the character a regular on the show because he exemplifies qualities we all should have, and through his presence and manner, gives the audience different view of the subject of death and dying than the usual treatment given by TV, literature, and movies. I for one, think it's great, and I enjoy these discussions. We are all welcome to discuss what we want, as long as it relates to the show, and as long as it is done with courtesy and respect. I want to second what Jennie said. I used to work for a studio many moons ago, and nothing "spooked" production crews and the casts of the shows more than having fans show up unannounced on a set. And if TBAA is a closed set (as I suspect it probably is), nobody would get any further than the security guard posted 1/4 mile away from the "action" anyhow without proper clearance. The reason they close sets, especially with popular shows such as TBAA, is because there are a lot of mentally ill people out there. Remember Rebecca Schaeffer? The studio I worked for was the same one where a security guard was shot and killed by a "fan" who was trying to get to Michael Landon. It is a sad reality of life that these people are out there, and the production crews can't tell the difference on the surface who are the mentally ill and who are just "enthusiastic". Their number one priority while they are on location, besides putting out the best show they can, is to keep their people safe, and I have a feeling that if we all showed up there en masse it would result in a little "discussion" with the local law enforcement. :-) Anyway, that is my perspective on the matter. Of course, if someone has a contact at TBAA and can get clearance for us, that would be a different story. I also would be interested in an informal get together with just us, although finances would be interesting to work out. It is because of those qualities that John has and shows through Andrew, that gave special meaning to an episode that changed my life around. He truely is a rare and special person, whom I would love to meet if just to "learn" those things from him. I don't believe admiring someone for those qualities is wrong, as long as we don't "forget" Whom is first in our lives. Matter of fact, I think it even says so in the Bible (I just can't think clearly where right now, as I'm still relatively "new" to it, can anyone who is more knowledgeable in it help me out here?). I guess that makes it 4 cents worth now. Until later. I won't add my "usual" line, since it seems to offend others (I'll have to think up a new one).
