That's the right name for the episode. There's a pretty good synopsis of it available from the TBAA web site under Season #2 Episodes. It's also available in short story form from the TBAA book. I'd always wondered how medication could affect an angel. Martha explains her viewpoint in the book by saying that angels perform their duties on earth with human bodies that are often susceptible to human frailty and temptation. She says that since Monica's body has been relatively unsullied by earthbound life, she will occasionally have negative responses to toxins, drugs, and new experiences such as what happened to her in "Jacob's Ladder." This view is pretty much consistent throughout all of TBAA with the angels feeling cold, tired, Monica feeling old, etc. I'm not too sure angels are quite so subsceptable to humanity, but since this is a TV show I'll accept her explanation. --April ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ April J. It was interesting to me to compare the aging makeup they did on Roma and the aging makeup they did on last week's Voyager on Kes as well; it's always amusing when there are coincidental similarities in plots of different series that are occasionally aired right together. I expect Roma had well over an hour of makeup since they were doing makeup and wig stuff on her entire face *and* neck. The way the latex moved on her neck was what really impressed me about this makeup job, even though I did gripe a bit that they didn't seem to have done much with her hands. At least they did pull her sleeves down so you couldn't see much of her hands. I thought that was a very clever way to handle the issue so as not to need to do any more makeup than they already were. Nice work. There was another Andrew before John Dye. The episode I remember was An Unexpected Snow. (For more info on that episode, check the first TBAA book.) The first Andrew was played by Charles Rocket. And while he was good, I much prefer John as Andrew :). Just my two cents worth. I just finished participating in a local theatre production of >HMS Pinafore, and we had to do the makeup thing for a week Well, let me say a thing or three here. About this, it's refreshing to see a thread about television productions. If any of the old timers noticed my uncharacteristic silence, I've been waiting for the religious fervor that has swept the list lately to calm down. (This is not flame bait, religious opinions certainly have their place here, but it's been a bit overdone). I think that one thing that Hollywood makeup men still can't do well is make a young person look old. It's easier on stage, I believe, because the spotlight isn't quite as harsh. The distance and dimmer light make it easier for the audience to see what they expect to see. And another thing .... As far as hair goes, I agree with you girls. The only male on television with better hair than John Dye is Kevin Sorbo. Oh, yeah, one more thing, The reunion, (or is it just "union", since it's the first), would probably work out well for people. I just had an FTF (my first) with another list member who was visiting her brother here at Addy. I was a bit leery, but she was just as nice as you'd expect another angel fan to be, (sorry about the sleet storm, Springtime in Ithaca!). Anyway, if a common gathering could be agreed upon, it would be worth it. Kevin PS - About Microsoft Kevin and the grenade. Good to hear from you, man. Actually, I'm not entirely sure why they did this, but they changed the names of *both* the previous Angels of Death to Andrew in the book. The AOD in "An Unexpected Snow" is named Adam, actually. And the one in "Interview With an Angel" is Henry. Yet both are called Andrew in the book despite the fact that pictures of the actors who played them (Charles Rocket and Bruce Altman) are seen in the photos. I found that a trifle odd. :-) Take care, Jennie finabair @ .addy.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 11:32:15 -0700 From: Kevin Brown To: tbaangel @ .execpc.com, "'Kevin'" Subject: RE: Roma's Makeup Job MSG.dns.addy.com> > From: Kevin[SMTP:kda1 @ .addy.edu] > > As far as hair goes, I agree with you girls. While sitting in my Ancient Greece class just about 30 minutes ago, I began to wonder something about where the angels got their names. I mean, I know Andrew was the name of one of Jesus' disciples. And until I went to my class, that's the only one I could figure out. Then my prof mentioned something about a Saint Monica. And instantly I became curious as to if this Saint Monica is where Monica the angel is derived from. And if so, where is Tess derived from? Just looking for any ideas, knowledge or comments. Re:the switching of names of the AODs in the TBAA book-I'll agree with Jennie that this is darn confusing. I mean, it's bad enough that they changed the names in the text-but then they use pictures from the episode which CLEARLY show that the aod's are NOT John Dye. Maybe they could've just included a story with Andrew in it (how bout Into the Light-bet that'd make a great short story!) and let poor Adam and Henry retain their real identities. I don't think they should give the impression that there's only one aod-Andrew's a great guy but he can't be everywhere at once. The name question is interesting-in addition to Monica, Tess and Andrew, we also have Ruth, Celeste, Kathleen (she WAS an angel once!), Adam, Henry-uh-the one Olympia Dukakis played-the one that chewed out Tess in the Halloween episode-um-gee, what were their names? Well, anyway,it's an interesting idea to contemplate. I think "Peter" would be a good name for another male angel, if another ever shows up on the show. Don't want it to get too crowded tho. Olympia Dukakis played-the one that chewed out Tess in the >Halloween episode-um-gee Actually Olympia Dukakis played the arch-angle in the episode with the doctor who was trying to keep the little girl from hearing angles. She appeared to the little girl and then at the end to the doctor, little girl and Monica. I really liked that ending because of what she said to Monica about her singing. That it is only said to make a joyful noise, not a beautiful noise. So therefore Monica should sing whenever she wanted to. The one that chewed Tess out in the Halloween ep was Estell Gettey. She played an angel from the manners department. I remember this because she offers Tess a wintergreen lifesaver and says she likes them because they are like little wintergreen halos on the tounge. I like them also and I keep them on my desk at work to remind me of that ep. Just my two cents. Just IMHO, but I've always had the impression that the angels were assigned their names and physical forms when they took Earth-based jobs. I mean, it figures that their true angel-in-heaven forms aren't necessarily human, (since, according to most theologies I'm aware of, that kind of being usually *predates* humanity) and I suspect that they don't need human-type names to tell each other apart in their natural environment, so to speak, so I kind of assumed their names/bodies were "issued"-- like uniforms. Just think of how Tess recognized Monica in "The Sky is Falling" as being from "Search and Rescue", or how Celeste was having trouble dealing with the concept of having a physical form in "Angel of Death". I also seem to recall Tess and others using phrases like "this is the form God gave you" or "you have to deal with the limitations of this form".... stuff like that... so it makes sense that, once an angel's been assigned a human form (and a human name to go with it), the angel's Earthly activities will be limited (when not in full flying-in-midair, glow-in-the-dark angel mode) by ordinary human physical limitations. For example, Monica can "angel-zap" herself from place to place, but she can't change the fact that she's allergic to cigarette smoke, even if that makes her assignment harder. Tess can glow like a light bulb when she has to but she can't change the fact that she feels cold in snow, even if she doesn't like it. What do you all think? Can't you just picture their "natural" forms being more like, say, the Seraphim in Madeline L'Engel's book? (Drat, >can't remember the title-- one of the Meg & Charles books, the one with >the mitochondria....) The book you're talking about is "A Wind In The Door", and Proginsokes ("Progo") is a cherubim. And no, I can't see angels looking like a sphere covered with eyes and wings poking out all over the place. :) But, I should think if they *want* to look like that, they probably can. Really though, I think the last book in the series, "Many Waters" is more what you mean. "Many Waters" is when Sandy and Dennys time travel back to Noah's time. L'Engle never names the word "angels", but there are beings she calls seraphim. The seraphim act very much like I would expect angels to act, and the way she portrays their state of being is much the same way I believe they are able to "be". The series is a really good series, I highly reccommend it. I positivly *love* "Many Waters". It's actally a seperate book from the rest of the series, it stands alone. FYI, in most religions (I believe...) seraphim are actually higher than "angels" in the hierachy. (I can't remember all the kinds of heavenly hosts at the moment, I believe there is seven..? Or is it nine?) What we call the "choirs of angels" is many different kinds of beings, each with a different job. Angels of the kind like Monica, Tess, and Andrew are supposed to be are at the bottom, they are the ones with close contact with humans. I am Catholic, so this is taken from what I have learned about angels in my faith, I know other religions believe in angels, but I'm not sure just how much belief we share. If anyone else's religion has a different viewpoint, I don't mean to intrude.
