On TBAA Filming Set! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 1997 00:51:14 -0400 (EDT) From: Finabair @ .addy.com To: tbaangel @ .execpc.com Subject: TBAA meeting in SLC this fall - survey of sorts OK, if we want to actually do anything like this, I would like to get an idea of how many of us actually could/would consider heading out to SLC just to meet and talk and tour and have fun. So I've come up with the following survey. *Please* send your replies directly to me at finabair @ .addy.com and not to the list. :-) Basically what I am thinking about now is getting a count of people who *really* think they could possibly/probably go, so that I can look into things like getting decent hotel rates somewhere and what tourist-type things there are to do. I am thinking that there is no way this could all be arranged (and afforded, by at least five people I've talked to) any earlier than fall, so I am aiming for then. September or October, I think. So I would like you to e-mail me if you are seriously interested in such a get-together. Please answer the following questions: 1. I'll certainly look into visiting the set or talking to someone(s) from TBAA. I suspect the group *may* be too large for this, but you never know for sure until you try. To this end, I need a count of people who think they *really* would go if something like this could be arranged. Realistically, though, this probably will wind up being a get-together of just us listmembers, so let me know whether you are interested *only* if there is something directly involving TBAA or if you are interested whether they are involved or not. 2. In trying to come up with a good date for this excursion, I figure it would help to know if there are certain weekends that would be bad for a lot of people. I doubt we can find a weekend that everyone who wants to could attend, but let me know if there are weekends that would be really bad for you so that I can come up with the best one possible. Just the months of September and October. :-) 3. In the same vein, if some of the activities are planned on a weekday would you be able to attend those or do we need to stick with weekend plans? 4. How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? What is the airspeed of an unladen sparrow? (sorry, just seeing if y'all are awake...) 5. What sorts of things does everyone want to do and see? For instance, do you want to go as a group to see the Mormon Tabernacle, do you want to go hiking somewhere in the area, do you want to go out for some double decaf mocha latte? The possibilities are endless. I'll probably compile a list of ideas and ask everyone who expresses an interest in the trip to let me know which ones interest them. I'm not going to work out any tight itinerary for the weekend; I prefer to play most things like this by ear, but it helps to know ahead of time who shares an interest in what, and we can make tentative plans this way. It's not about their pasts, it's about the present. Stephanie, the director of the retirement home, is merely reacting to the "old folks" as, sadly but true, any young person would. Yes as we got older the natural role reversal occurs, and often times the people we looked to as children have now become the children and look to us for certain things that have become too difficult. Someone mentioned that the nursing home they had filmed it in seemed like an unlikely situation or an extreme. Well I have first hand knowledge that that nursing home and the scene where everyone was in the tv room on Visitors day was very much the norm throughout this loving country. (Clarify, I am 25 so no I haven't lived in a nursing home, but I have performed plays and talked to the residents at length) In TBAA a remark that Tess said, "Ol George is looking for a different kind of joy than the kind an angel can give." We don't like to think that our parent's still "do it" and much less our grandparents. But God create sex to be a wonderful thing and to be enjoyed by all in the bounds of marriage. (that part is a bit of my beliefs.) And while we are treating our elderly like children we forget they too have dreams, Monica said "when he knocks at my door he brings more than just flowers, he brings me his hopes & dreams. Expectations. I don't know what to do with them. I had no idea that it would hurt this much to break someone's else's heart. Human Love is so complicated." About Stephanie her little ageistic remark was when she tells Tess, "what makes you think that these people can handle all that (childish) activity." () added perception And Tess responds, "you can lock up that piano (her feelings of failure as a child) but you can't lock up the feelings." Stephanie's story was not irrelevant to the Monica/George joy thing, but an integral part of the ageism. We all need to understand where the person is coming from before we can relate and understand and teach and encourage. Monica had to become old to find out what the joys of being old were. One of the bummers was that she couldn't drink coffee anymore--poor Monica. Knowledge comes with age, and "clean hands pure heart".(did anyone notice that sign in the main room?) penny for your thoughts, In His Grace, Andrea ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 1997 04:55:00 -0400 (EDT) From: SMGMN @ .addy.com To: tbaangel @ .execpc.com Subject: Re: Roma on Rosie Hey Tanya that's great news about Roma being on Rosie! Having been raised by my grandparents, and being around many of their elderly relatives, I agree wholeheartedly with what you have said here. However, not only do the elderly have gifts for the young, (such as their knowledge and wisdom). The young also have gifts for the elderly; their enthusiasm, joy at just being alive, and enjoyment of simple pleasures/new life experiences. The young help the old to remember what it was like to *be* young. My grandmother, who will be 88 in June, has told me many times that I kept her and my grandpa "young." My grandmother was 43 when she took me to raise as a new-born baby. "Missing in Action" was such a beautiful episode. . .it explored the fragility of human feelings, and illustrated how each of our own lives impacts on others. You don't go through this life (or leave it) without touching the life of someone else. Anyway this is what popped in my head when I was shocked that our goodlooking, compassionate, godly man, Andrew, said/did when the cost of defending a friend would cost him his job. You know when he defends George when Stephanie wantes to kick him out. How come Andrew didn't say, "go ahead kick me out too"? Or maybe at least a little more arguing from him. Maybe asking to speak to Stephanie in her office, and then asking "What is so wrong with honoring a friend the way a soldier would?" It seemed like George was friends with Ella...so it's only natural that he would want to mourn her death or honor her passing in some way. I figured he was just too flabbergasted to reply at all. Sort of like how he reacted to the film-cutting job in "The Journalist". He was so astonished that anyone would be that insensitive/ use him to distort the truth that way, that he was stunned into silence. And you'll notice that she *didn't* really kick George out, or fire Andrew. I suspect that his shocked reaction make her think of what she was saying and realize how petty it sounded. While she probably didn't feel she could publicly back down, she did just quietly let the problem slide, didn't she? BTW, I thought Stephanie's reaction quite in character. This is a woman who doesn't allow her staff to use the word "death", who puts plastic plants in the rooms so the inmates will never have to see anything die. Of *course* she'd object to an obvious, if symbolic, acknowledgement of a resident's death like lowering a flag to half-mast. Which doesn't mean that I agree with her, just that it's in character for her as presented. > I mean I don't mean to pick on our dear beloved character, Whyever not? Kvetching about perceived inconsistencies is one reason the list is *here*, for heaven's sake. > After all it's only a temp job. Yes, but it's a temp job God Himself told him to take. Would *you* just up and quit a job God had put you on? ;> Besides, if he *did* say that, and then she said, "You're fired", she'd have that much difficulty, pride-wise, in backing down later. As it is, I think he handled it very well. :) Speaking of perceived inconsistencies.... IIRC, grenades are usually hand-thrown, right? So how could George claim never to have been in the front lines if he was close enough to the battle zone that a grenade could land in front of his tent? (Yes, I thought that was stretching it a bit, myself. Talk about stereotyped Hero's Deaths!) The pot roast comment, OTOH, was *lovely*. Diane E # "Far be it from me... to depreciate such pleasures. This seemed to calm and soothe Monica, and served to help keep her focused on her "assignment" of helping George. Part of the "magic" of this show is the care and concern shown by the angels for each other. . .particularly touching, too, was Tess's comforting of Monica immediately following her "transformation" on the swing. Monica needed Tess, while on the swing; George needed Monica; Monica needed Andrew, as did Lorraine, (when she asked him to bring her the wooden box.) The rest home administrator, Stephanie, needed Tess. Finally, George was an "angel" for Lorraine. (I was thinking as I watched the interaction between George and Lorraine about Martha Williamson stating her belief on OPRAH that people can be angels for other people.) I don't think people threaten Andrew very often-I wonder what Stephanie would do if she knew she'd mouthed off to the Angel of Death? Andrew isn't the talk-back type-I've never even seen him really angry except in "The Journalist", although I haven't seen many episodes. Maybe Andrew is such a sweet, compassionate guy that when confronted with the baser sides of the humans he loves so much, he's too shocked to react immediately. It saddens him when he sees humans treat each other badly (like in "Violin Lesson") and is REALLY flummoxed when they treat HIM badly. Just a thought! Nonetheless I thought I'd pass this along. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For security reasons, the set is not open to the public. However, I would presume that an organized, reasonably-sized group could be accomodated if and when that could be worked out. The regular cast shoots about 14 hours per day Monday thru Friday. The guest cast additionally shoots 14 hours on Saturday. Because of this schedule, there is little time for fun on the set. A film set, unlike a tape (sitcom) set, has no space for audience members. We shoot in a post office one morning, a forest that afternoon, and inside a hospital that night. There is no time or space for fans to watch the shooting. As I say, if you had a very small group that could possibly be worked out. It depends upon what this convention looks like and how it is organized. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks! Best always!
