But naturally as soon as I heard Roma was going to be on, I wanted to watch it. I thought she did a wonderful job. Letterman on the other hand seemed to be rude and condesending to me. I didn't like the way he treated her at all. And some of the things he seemed to be insinuating were terrible. (esp. the part of Angels and prostitutes) Anyway, Roma did a fabulous job and was as charming as always. I agree also with the other person who said she didn't seem to fully understand the audience's response to her. Let's see what happens on The Rosie O'Donnell Show. Can't wait. I am glad that TBAA is getting so much publicity and that the Letterman audience seemed geniunely glad to see Roma. Hugs in Christ, Judy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Apr 1997 17:25:32 -0700 From: Richard Treadwell To: TBAAngel @ .execpc.com Subject: Roma on Letterman Greetings... My guess is that part of an actors/actresses responsibility is to appear on talk shows, etc. to promote their show...especially since TBAA & David Letterman are both CBS. However, my initial reaction was that it would be a difficult assignment for Roma because his shows tend to be silly and irreverent of most everything and everyone. As I watched my tape of this particular show, it seemed extraordinary silly even for David Letterman. There was the hair piece in the coffee cup and the snake...an interesting introduction for an angel. Then when they got Katie Couric involved in the silliness,...indignity..., I thought, poor Roma, David would pull out an "apple" to go with the snake!!! What was interesting to me was that, after all the goofing off with the snake, the whole mood of the show seemed to change when Roma walked in...or it seemed to me. Over all, my impression is that Roman's presence literally changed the whole tone of the show...someone mentioned her "sweetness and sincerity." Though David isn't a good interviewer...probably there for his silliness...he was far more respectful to Roma than he was to Katie Couric! Some people simply have a presence which elicits respect. I think Roma has such a presence. IMO, Roma did an exceptional job in what could have been a very difficult situation for her. Her "class" was evident and, as they are constantly saying on TBAA, she made a difference!!! Did anyone else have that impression? Of course, the fact that I was Falling-off-the-couch laughing over SnakeQuest 2000 tells you where *my* sense of humor was last night! :-) I thought Roma looked quite nervous doing the talk show thing with such a large live audience and no script. That's got to be a *very* scary thing to do--especially the first few times. And especially when it's on Letterman, who, although he amuses me, is not the most predictable or "safe" or even nice host. If he likes or is amused by someone, though, it can be fun. (When David Duchovny was on--one of many times now; Dave loves him-- it was a *riot*. David has a dry sense of humor that had Dave rolling, and that surprised Dave.) I thought he was nice enough with Roma--I've seen enough of the show to know that he was admirably well-behaved in general. I was most impressed, I think, with Roma paying attention and picking up on the (admittedly very obvious) running gag, and making a relevant comment, "You know, there are no snakes in Ireland." :-) >PS. I am trying very hard to restrain myself from giving a lengthy dissertation about *why* each of these eps is counted among my favorites....okay....obviously I'm failing on that score. There wasn't a *limit* to this, was there? Mine are listed in chronological, not preferential, order. 1. Interview with an Angel (One of the first episodes where they did very interesting things with the Standard Structure of a TV episode. I really liked the framing of the interview as the storytelling process to lead us through the Gerald McRaney plot. Also had one of my favorite lines: "Don't come home until you've forgiven snow, and basketball, and me, and that man in there, and yourself...." (paraphrased). It was first one I saw--decided to keep watching both to figure out what was going on and because no matter *what* it was, I figured that Roma's accent was worth the price of admission alone. To quote the reaction of a friend as she was watching this and sobbing, "Schmaltzy. This is *so* schmaltzy." But her reaction was the same nonetheless.) 2. Unidentified Female (another ep that toyed with the standard chronological structure and pacing of your typical show. Some really fascinating work and interesting directorial and writing choices were made here, imo) 3. Till We Meet Again (another ep that is carried largely on the strength of its guest actors and characters. I think this is an episode I have a personal bias toward, but I do think it was well-constructed. One of their best "normal" eps, imo.) 4. Indigo Angel (Another well-structured and excellently paced episode. Some truely *lovely* lines: "The Angel of Death is on hold! ....Actually, I don't have a last name either. ....Hello?", and incredible guest performances.) 5. Jacob's Ladder (Wow! For me, this was one of the most powerful eps they have had, due to the message, the presentation, the guest performances, the dialogue. I think perhaps one of the more compelling elements of this episode was that there was no back-up readily apparent, and there was no promise that Monica would be able to do what she need to do--or, in fact, to figure out what she needed to do--without that backup) 6. Sins of the Father (Some truly stunning, powerful stuff here. I had some problems with it, but they weren't problems with the ep itself so much as with what I felt were glossings-over by the *characters*....and they were making the statements believeably; I know people make those kind of platitudes as comments, and I know that they're often sincere. I just don't *believe* that the "We have to save our children" statements are going to be of much use by themselves. I was impressed that we had this episode that, while it ended kind of well, was clearly not a problem "solved"; there were still huge numbers of issues unresolved and there was still great risk of the angels' efforts being undone. They bandaged something that is continuing to hemorrhage, imo, and there are no guarantees. This ep is a good setup for a potential sequel ep.) 7. The Sky is Falling (I love almost everything about this ep, and have already expounded at length. Repeatedly. I will restrain myself. But, oh, the *lovely* period costuming.... And the great dialogue, and a great guest cast...) 8. The Journalist (Again, loved almost everything about this one. And have expounded at length repeatedly. Great guest cast, great dialogue, nice treatment of several issues--and without being *overly* saccharine...they were somewhat, but it was more realistic than they often are, imo) Eps I didn't consider at the stellar level of those listed above, but which I still counted as outstanding: 1. Cassie's Choice (personal bias; I'm an adopted child....some nice treatment of the issue....nice treatment again in the ep with Noah, the kidnapped-and-adopted child, although I didn't like several bits about that ep as a whole) 2. The Hero (some truly powerful stuff with the guest characters....well drawn, well-acted characters making some very believable choices) 3. Angels on the Air (again, very believable and engaging guest characters--something I've long considered to be one of this series' greatest strengths is its ability to effectively create, introduce, make compelling, and draw us as the audience into the lives these people whom we know we will never see again after the hour is over) 4. The Driver (Loved the characters in this one. Thought Dihann Carroll's "mom" was a bit, um, one-dimensional, but the rest were *beautifully* drawn. I was especially fond of the kid's mother and the cop. Nice stuff.) 5. Rock 'n' Roll Dad (some excellent story work, nice addressing of the loss-of-a-parent issue and coping with death tactics to take with younger children, and an impressive performance from A. Martinez--I had written him off and was glad to have it proved to me that he could, indeed, act) 6. Lost and Found (what do I need to say? *grin*) 7. Portrait of Mrs. Campbell (I really enjoyed the performances of the guests here, as well 8. Statute of Limitations (excellent treatment of guilt and the varying responses to obsessing over it. Also not *immediately* apparent what they were doing. Nice job. Again, good characters, good guest actors.) 9. Random Acts (another bias--I'm a teacher, and I like John Ritter. I did think they did some nice work in this one, though, even when I look at it a bit objectively.) I'm stopping now. Honest. I think it had more to do with the fact that she was talking with Letterman then with the talk show format. I would be quite nervous with him not knowing what would come out of his mouth. She did very well on Regis & Kathie Lee--not nervous a bit and quite charming. Again, it would be a lot easier to talk to Kathie Lee Gifford then to Mr. Letterman. Also on R&KL, although Regis didn't have a clue who she was, Kathie Lee had worked with her and they had become friends and it showed in the interview. Always helps to be talking to a friend. > I was most impressed, I think, with Roma paying attention and picking up on > the (admittedly very obvious) running gag, and making a relevant comment, > "You know, there are no snakes in Ireland." :-) It took me a while to figure out why she said that since I zipped right through the show to Roma's part. I finally remembered seeing the snake bit in fast forward and thought was a good comment by Roma. I also liked Roma putting in the "not under the covers, undercover" comment to put Letterman in his place. I think she set herself up for the bit about the hooker knowing Letterman couldn't resist the chance, but I could be wrong. Either way she handled it well. > >PS. I, too was disgusted at having to sit through 45 minutes of Dave proving to the world that he's a bozo for 4-5 minutes of Roma! :( Had he done a fraction of what any talk show host with an ounce of class would have done, and researched the show a bit, he would've gotten a lot more respect from me. He had the opportunity to talk with a very special gal, and he blew it. (at the bottom) ------------Fwd message-------------------------- WARNING: The following post is by an extremely cranky woman who can't find the right sort of super-glue to stick together the bits of her Tom Servo ice bucket. Um...at the risk of being severely trouted, I have to say I found the Letterman-is-a-jerk theme running through the current digest rather...odd and -- forgive me -- deserving of a "Well, *duuh!"* Jerkiness and juvenalia are Mr. Letterman's stock in trade. So are deliberately stoooooopid sketches, crankiness, pointless pranks, and a distinctive dental arrangement. Some people like it. Some people don't. Either opinion is valid; it's a matter of personal taste. (I don't care one way or another -- I watch "The Tick" when he's on.) This sort of thing is true of every other talk show host. Oprah wants to make sure she's in charge at all times. Rosie is loud, likes toys, has no fear of looking foolish, and a fetish for obscure junk food. Phil is, to my great joy, finally gone from our airwaves. The truth is, tv talk show hosts are there to put on a show, and most of their guests aren't really that important to them as individuals. Research is not a priority. With luck, they'll be able to pronounce a guest's name correctly. You want discourse or solid information, try Charlie Rose, Frontline, The South Bank Show, or NPR. Read the Village Voice or The Comics Journal or The New Statesman or SFX or Q or The Sunday Times. All you're gonna get from Regis and Kathie Lee is five minutes of your guest of choice in a neat outfit, and maybe a song. If you're very lucky, you won't have to hear about what Cody spit up that morning. Expecting a talk show host to be anything other than what she is will, I fear, lead to disappointment. It's even a bit unfair -- sorta like watching TBAA and wishing they wouldn't talk about that God stuff all the time 'cause it's annoying and gets in the way of the cool special effects. Praying for better tv (but always grateful for reading matter), Ann Everheart @ .addy.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Ann has some good points here; I *still* remember the night David Duchovny (from the X-Files) was on Letterman and he showed us the cue card with his last name on it...it said something like, "Duh-kuv-knee". I still laugh, too. :-) As long as I'm at it, I'll add my two cents. Dave actually seemed to me to have been charmed by Roma. He was a lot kinder than he often is towards guests, and at one point he was basically *babbling* at her, which I found pretty funny. I did notice that she was only on the program for a short time and was slightly disappointed with that. I also noticed that they had two commercial breaks that were *very* close together right before they brought her out and had the impression that perhaps there were a couple of technical difficulties or something so that her time wound up being even shorter than expected. (just checked my tape - 2 minutes, 15 seconds between one commercial break and the next...) I loved the looks Roma kept giving the audience when they were bound and determined to take everything she said in the most suggestive possible light. They were priceless. Patricia, here. Well, seems I goofed. I thought Andrew was in the turkey ep, "Unexpected Snow", but thanks to Karen and to Jennie, I now know that was Adam. I do recall seeing a few eps with Adam in them. How many was he in? And Henry? Anyone know? I must not have seen "The One That Got Away". Jennie, what was this about a wedding on a train? I guess I need to do some research. What episode was that picture of John taken from that appears in the opening credits and on his web page? I know I remember that show, I just can't think of it. Wasn't it one of the first ones he was in? Or is my memory just jumbled? Thanks. Where I live, Rosie comes on at 4:00 pm (EDT), but, everyone may want to check their local listings. I just happen to catch Della Reese on "Entertainment Tonight" this evening. She was talking about the upcomming episode, "Volunteers". Did anyone else see this segment? I have a friend in LA. What issue of "Daily News" is the article about TBAA in? I thought she might be able to get me a copy, but I'm not sure. Thanks. Well, seems to me, many folks on this list thought that Roma's segment on "Letterman" was too short, and that he was uncomfortable with her. I agree. I also agree that Roma did a wonderful job, looked lovely, and was charming. Maybe I just have a different sense of humor, but I thought some humorous moments came out of the interview when Roma was trying to explain things, and David obviously didn't have a clue (see my previous post on yesterday's digest). Yes, I agree with everyone who said the "Rosie" show should be a better interview. Sorry if that became long - winded. I guess I was just trying to explain myself :) !!! Darla, thanks for agreeing (sp) with me on John's hair! Yes, Roma looked beautiful in "Missing In Action" with the long hair. Hmmm...a bun for some scenes? Maybe. But, maybe they wanted to keep her character looking basically the "same", so as to identify with her. I don't know. Just a guess. Maybe they thought "Monica" shouldn't change *that* much. I also like Della's hair. It looks good on her, and yes, she definitely (sp) "radiates joy, peace, and fulfillment"! Diana - I know you didn't ask me this directly, but I have a guess for GCALJS. Is it: God Created Andrew Like Jesus Sees? Well, just a wild guess, but I thought I try for fun :) !!!! Finally, does anyone know where I can find a copy of "Campus Man"? I can't seem to find one! I was wondering how Letterman would treat her - I haven't watched him for ages - when I did, I thought he *could* be origional and funny at times, especially when he went out on his 'around the town' type segments. However, I did notice that he really ripped into some of his guests, and treated them quite poorly. My roomate and I figured it might have been because those guests might have had an attitude back stage, so this was his way of getting back at them. I don't know. She definately isn't his typical type of guest. I'm looking forward to Rosie tomorrow - I've only watched her a couple of times, but it should be interesting - Rosie is such a contrasting personality to Roma. Interestingly enough, I was leafing through a copy of 'The Enquirer' in the staffroom the other day, and I happened upon the headline "Touched By an Angel Star Rescues Lost Child". I don't take much stock in tabloid rags, but it was a cute little blurb about how Roma found a lost little girl in an airport, and brought her to her mother. All in a day's work ;-) Anyways, I'd better get going. If you haven't been to the TBAA web site lately, there's a neat letter by Martha Williamson posted there about the next ep, and also they finally updated the FAQ sheet.
