Tonight's episode really challenged me - my hat goes off as high as I can lift it to those who have the patience to work with handicapped children. As a substitute teacher, I often see handicapped students in the schools, and in my classes. They often have aides working with them, and I keep thinking what specially gifted people they are. I love how TBAA showed how the juvenile offenders needed the children as much as the children needed them. The juvenile offenders needed to be valued, and shown that they weren't just *throw aways*. Apparently, this program is in effect already, I don't know where, but I would really like to see the stats on how effective it is. Diana, you were so right when you said that children need a mentor. I don't take much stock in the education courses I had to take in university, most of them were full of politically correct drivel, but one good thing that was stressed was how one person alone could make a difference in a child's life. My sister, who is a teacher in an inner city - type school often tells me how her students confide in her about their home, and some of the stories she tells break your heart. That's why this show, imho, is so challenging and important to me. One person *can* make a difference. Just my 2 cents worth :-) Marlis ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Apr 97 21:46:33 +1200 From: dave hartly To: tbaangel @ . .execpc.com Subject: Heartwarming tbaa Well firsty i wish to say sorry to those who have mailed me and i have not had a chance to reply, i been geting a lot of mail, I felt the "promised land" one of tbaa was ok, i wished that it would have carryed on, to just see the family leaveing left more questions then it answered, i cry after most tbaa,s the one that really got to me was the one abpout the kids who are getting their faces fixed and how the show paid so some of them could get it done also. Collin Powell, who appeared before and after the TBAA show, reminded me of my days as a youth volunteer at a VA hospital taking care of the "residents" of war, Korea, WW II and I. THey were a lively motley crew. They liked to play cards with us. Basically, they liked spending time with us, because we care. Oh, we were a rowdy bunch of high schooler. Many of them did not have any experience in geriactrics. I did, when my grandmother had a stroke, my family took care of her. Helping the vets reminded me of Grandma and her struggles. I did kind of care for them back then. Now, They made so many changes to the VA that I don't know if they are alive or with God. I do remember those faces of yesteryear. I worked my 11th grade there afterschool, a couple of days a week. They were special people. The program I was in was a pilot program. It did not catch on. Now, I volunteer my time at a farmers market that help supports a senior citizen center. I am a bagel pickup man. My brother and I help out whenever they need us, which is every week! I feel useful, part of something. That is what Gen. Powell was telling us. Be part of something. The Project Angel Food is one way, and that is cool. Believe me, that was an inspiring experience that makes me feel good to raise my hand and be counted on. I understand Martha was in the Southland when parts of the show was filmed. And this is what came to mind for me: As we know, this summit is a major event, all over the news everywhere, and it could bring about some powerful results. There will be meetings, discussions, speeches, articles, resolutions and more; and all these, with any luck and by His grace, will make for some real changes. But even more, people are moved and motivated by seeing this kind of giving in action, getting real results, and elevating the giver as much as the receiver. To dramatize it, presenting the reality and results in the kind of powerful way that TBAA presents everything it does, had a tremendous impact on me. I'm sure it will do the same for countless others, the more so since the episode was based on an actual story. By introducing and then closing the story, Colin Powell made this episode of TBAA an integral part of the summit. I believe that by its very nature, TBAA has now become one of the most, if not *the* most, powerful voices for it, at least for those who watched. If we see a surge of volunteers contributing to the betterment of our world when this is over, I believe that TBAA, Martha, Roma, Della and John and everyone else who made it happen can rightfully be given a good deal of the credit. If TBAA did not exist, the story may well have been dramatized some other way. But with TBAA's established characters and wonderfully crafted way of touching its viewers, the impact, I think, was far greater. Maybe it's no accident that TBAA happened to be around when this event was conceived. Does anyone know how the leaders of this summit and TBAA got in contact in the first place? -- Ray Simard rsimard @ . .addy.com "Who you are is more essential than that. It comes from God. I recorded it and watch it later, as Sunday is my busiest day. Just a brief intro of my activities, for anyone who cares, why Sunday is busy for me: in the morning I go to church at an Evangelical Covenant church, then teach sunday school for the 4 yr olds, then go to work at my parttime job at a department store, then I go to a college bible study after work. That's why I never can watch TBAA "live" on Sunday night. Anyway it's better on tape cuz you can stop it and get a tissue before the tears flood your lap. :') A bit more of an intro as to what I do other than my sunday routine, during the week I am a one-on-one instructional aide in a special day class. I am responsible for a 5yr old girl with multiple handicaps(tho she walks) she most noticiably presents autistic characteristics. We, the little girl & I, go to the regular ed kindergarten for integrated, parallel play. In the special day class we work on specific goals of feeding, color matching, bike riding, etc. Things that "normal" 5 yr old children should be able to & enjoy doing. The 5th graders come into the special day class to help out reading stories, or pushing the children on their bikes, or just talking to them and to the adults. Today we just had a reporter with a photographer (he reminded me a bit of "Andrew" when he was a photograper) come interview for a story about our PAL(Peer Assisted Program). So you see this ep especially touched me. :') What specifically sent tears down my cheeks was when Jason first rejected Kelly. And she was left there sad. I knew there was promise for Jason the moment he walked in the classroom because he was the only who asked "what's wrong with her?" Before you can teach the child you must understand the child where he/she is at. And though Jason didn't know what to do with the information of Kelly's CP, he was willing to try. Even if the trying was a competitive thing with the "Estes" guy. Wow TBAA is pushing this volunteer thing. After the nursing home ep, "Missing in Action" I looked up the nursing homes in Simi Valley. (that's my home town-CA) There are only 2. I haven't gotten around to going and visiting, but I am seriously thinking of working up a couple of signed songs and performing them. So Diana I strongly encourage you to seriously think about that urge and burning desire to volunteer at the library and put that desire to action. Everyone loves to be read to and studies have shown that it can help with literacy scores. :) As I'll find the time to put that burning desire to volunteer in the nursing home to action. ;) Anyway this is getting quite long, so bye for now.
