Yes, the rapist was pulling a sort of con game with God's name, but they made it clear that on some level he *was* sincere. He just misunderstood what "his part of the bargain" was. They didn't fall back on the traditional "rapists are automatically evil incarnate" image TV is so fond of. (Though, mind, *I'd* want a lot more proof that a rapist had changed before *I'd* trust him than if I was dealing with, say, a shoplifter or petty thief. But then, I'm not God. ;> ) At the beginning of the episode, I was dead-set against giving the man an inch of slack. By the end, I was slightly sympathetic toward him. And they didn't fall into the trap of making the victim a saintly woman who could instantly forgive her attacker or deal with the horror of what had happened to her without help. Her reaction was downright hysterical and perfectly believable. And so was her husband's anger and refusal to face his anger. The way he rushed right out and tried to get a gun, as if killing his wife's attacker was the most obvious thing in the world was, to me, a terrifying look at his mindset. Frankly, by the end of the episode, I was far more worried about what *he'd* do to his wife than I was about what the rapist would do. He was a bomb waiting to explode and I certainly didn't blame his wife for packing up and preparing to run when he turned violent. IMHO, TBAA is at its best when it does this. Takes a theme or story that has practically become a TV cliche (violent criminal let out of prison by an uncaring system to prey on innocent victims again) and stand it on its head. There was also a lot of good stuff in this ep too, though, and I enjoyed it all the same. First off, I think that so much more should have been done in the scene where the rapist(Carl?) was telling Andrew how a "woman should submit to her husband". Andrew's response was great - don't use the Bible to justify evil actions - but that's pretty much where it ended. I think I'd have liked to see more of Andrew helping Carl get through his rage, maybe trying to deal with where these attitudes came from in the first place. I know of people who twist the Bible out of context to suit their own attitudes and wants, thereby turning off others who wrongly assume that those few represent what the Bible actually says. More should have been done on this issue. Also, I thought that Andrew wasn't supposed to interfere in cases of death? He didn't directly intervene when Carl was about to be shot, but saying "Don't do it!" is somewhat directing the 'free will' (don't get me wrong - I didn't want Carl to get shot, but how far is Andrew supposed to intervene?) Another thing was the ending - I'm not sure how Carl seeing himself as a child again fit in - was he arrested as a child, and that was him sitting in the police car many years ago? Or was it just to remind him of his innocence as a child? The ending seemed too rushed - it's like "Oh, Oh, we've only got 2 minutes left, and we haven't changed Carl's attitude enough yet. I know, let's have Tess meet him in the car, and end it with an inference that he changed when he sees the bible again! Yeah, that'll do it!" The end was too rushed, and left too many loose ends. I assume that Carl went back to prison, but for how long, and how did the husband and wife feel about him now? Mind you, it leaves a lot of openings for a sequel later. There were some good things too - the performances by the guests were all very well done and believable, the emotions were very intense. It's also nice to see that shows can imply violence(when it is necessary) without having to graphically portray it. The changing of the whisky bottle to the Bible in the garbage can was a nice touch, Monica and Tess as counsellors - they did a great job. I enjoyed this ep, but I feel it should have been done as a two parter, or maybe not try to tackle so many issues for one ep(although real life is complicated even more). In closing, I'd like to say my heart goes out to those who have dealt with these issues personally. I knew that in a list this size, this ep would hit rather close to home to some. I hope that this ep didn't dredge up too much pain. God Bless you all:-) I've said more than enough. Hope I didn't put you all to sleep. ;-) GB's Marlis ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 May 1997 22:24:10 -0400 (EDT) From: MBrown3776 @ .addy.com To: TBAAngel @ .addy.com Subject: Personal Tales While I was on a plane and unable to see this Sunday's episode, I can tell how powerful an episode it was by the tremendous support those on this mailing list give to each other. I just started watching TBAA in February after finding out that there was a *cute-guy-angel* on it, and that it wasn't too preachy or disgustingly sweet for ordinary human consumption. Well, maybe I'd better not classify myself as *ordinary*, that would be presumptuous ;-). I'm afraid I'm rather a strange composite of traits, so you may have to figure me out from my posts over time. If you do, let me know. The basics: raised as a Southern (Alabama) liberal Unitarian (yes, it's true, they really exist) during the Civil Rights/Viet Nam era. Consequently, I don't "do" religion, and I guess I'm too cynical to have faith in any doctrine. Which doesn't mean I don't believe in God, or that there is a purpose to life. So TBAA not being specific in regards to Christianity suits me fine. Mind you, I doubt that I'd be watching *religiously* without the incentive that John Dye provides! Which reminds me, I'd like to *humbly* submit myself as a potential candidate for the J/AiA society so that I can properly pay my respects by Androoling. Really, I'm usually not so serious, and I promise not to mention religion again. I'm more likely to get reprimanded discussing hockey, and gushing over *The Gorgeous One* (Sergei Fedorov of the Detroit Red Wings). I'm an environmental geologist, I have two cats, and I don't watch much TV, mostly ST:V, B5 (when they're not reruns), NHL games (depending on which cute European players are featured... uh, I mean which teams are playing), and now TBAA. I read SF/Fantasy, and my favorite author (Tolkien being in the Hall of Fame and therefore ineligible) is Janny Wurts (_The War of Light and Shadows_ is the best book(s) I've read since LOTR). I've never acted, except in high school, but I've been singing country-rock since the age of 14, and have been in several bands with quite a large "fan following." I was the only girl in each of these. I was rather pretty back then, and received quite a lot of attention from the males that came to hear us. . . I was flattered and embarrassed at times, too, but I *loved* it, anyway! Performers do what they do because they love their craft, and because they love people. They are used to attention from fans, and most are comfortable with it, as long as it remains within the bounds of decency, sanity, and safety. They get an "adrenalin-rush" from performing for their fans, and an equal "rush" from the appreciation their fans show for their efforts. Practice, rehearsal, etc., just doesn't have the magic that the real "okay, this is *it*" performance does. It's a *natural* high, that's for sure! Actors, singers, etc., need their fans, just as much as their fans need *them*! I'm sure that John is very amused, flattered, yes, even a little embarrassed by our "Androoling," but I'm sure he's *loving* it, too. . .
