She said: Yes, the rapist was pulling a sort of con game with God's name, but they made it clear that on some level he *was* sincere. He just misunderstood what "his part of the bargain" was. They didn't fall back on the traditional "rapists are automatically evil incarnate" image TV is so fond of. I am glad that they didn't make the rapist totally evil incarnate too (although Chris Noth can play a very scary guy!!). I happen to know two men who served time in prison for rape and attempted rape. I actually worked with one, and being a wildlife biologist that means time out in the middle of nowhere. Which frankly was a little scary. I believe that both of these guys have changed, and I have seen them dealing with Megan's law and trying to get jobs. One of them applies and puts down the truth about his past, the other only applies for jobs that don't ask. The most difficult thing for me is to look at these guys and try to imagine the horror they inflicted on another human being, and why they would do such a thing. They are both pretty head on about their past and they accept full reponsibility for what they did, which is what I think the angels were trying to get across to both Carl and Ed. I thought I put this in my e-mail, but I guess I didn't. There was a televsion series called "Ferris Bueller" that starred Charlie Schlatter. The series was short lived, and lasted maybe 6 episodes (give or take). It was also based on the movie of the same name that starred Matthew Broderick. At first I too had concluded that Carl was merely mouthing Scripture to snow everyone, and the parole board in particular, but when he started (mis)using it to defend his violence to his ex-wife, that clearly wasn't just saying what a parole officer would want to hear. It seemed to me that he was trying to drown his rage and violence in Scriptural verbiage rather than drawing on it to help him confront them, and Andrew called him on that. I especially liked Andrew's pointed, "God doesn't make bargains." I found the simultaneous appearances of Andrew and Monica in angel form to be especially riveting. Andrew's firm entreaties alternating with Monica's gentle encouragements were very powerful. I haven't seen this done before; has anyone else seen it? I can see how this episode could stir up a lot of different feelings in anyone who has been in a situation at all similar. I sincerely hope that, if not immediately than eventually, this program may help those here (and those not here but who saw it) who have ever been in such a situation to find some measure of comfort in it and help in the process of healing. -- Ray Simard rsimard @ . .addy.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 May 1997 18:49:19 -0700 From: Kevin Brown To: "'tbaangel @ . .addy.com'" , "'Diana Seals-Hopkins'" Subject: RE: Andrew and PL MSG.dns.addy.com> I'm going to say an extra prayer tonight that the Sonics don't play again until Wednesday. Isn't there an > expression about "don't judge your angel by his job title?" Ahhh, Andrew. The more I watched this PL EP, the more I began to wonder where the heck he actually was! Did anyone else feel like some of John's lines were left on the editing floor? He seemed so intense tonight, as if those lines that were in the EP were in the middle of a bigger text. Like I came in during the middle of a conversation. Like I had missed something. Then at the end, after feeling those things, I felt funny about him being in that EP. Like it may have just been a marketing ploy for PL (let's face it, John is gathering quite a major following). Like he was more than that particular EP. Especially when he was talking to Dinah. It's almost as if I could hear him explaining more to her than what was shown. And I felt that there SHOULD have been more said during his conversation with her. And my last thought as he read his last line was, "Boy, I need an extended hug from this guy." You know, one of those life is ok, i'll hold you for a few minutes so you can feel safe for a little while and have the energy to jump right back into life's highway with courage type hugs? I don't usually run across thoughts like that regarding actors because after all, in the real world they are just people working for a living, but for some reason Andrew's scenes just came to that conclusion at the end. Maybe because I've been having problems with apnea, maybe it was just Andrew's message that hit an old nerve somewhere. I don't try to understand it all. And by tomorrow, I'm sure that feeling will well be past. But i'll stick to my guns. It looked to me like Andrew was thrown in the plot as an afterthought/marketing technique, not someone the EP was built around. Oh well, I never really liked PL anyhow. When I was in HMS Pinafore - I was only one of the background chorus, but when it came to opening night, the energy in the cast, and the excitement of actually performing in front of an audience was so intense, I almost burst. Six months of practices and bonding with fellow cast and crew was all brought together for this - the actual performance, and it was nowhere near the rehearsals. I have also been thinking lately how John, and others who are attractive and highly popular deal with all the attention - and it was interesting to hear from someone who had been there. Thanks for the insight Darla :-) IMHO however, it takes a certain type of personality to deal with that kind of attention - someone who can be patient and gracious, and be able to take it all with a grain of salt, and I have a good impression that John is quite gracious and level headed about all this. Anyways, that's my two cents worth for tonight.
