The nurses worked for the Sanitary Commision, and had to be young women "of good family" and impeccable moral character (The "good family" requirement would, by definition, have ruled out Tess being a nurse, by the standards of the day. Though she could have been a cook, laundress, or some such working in the hospitals.). The doctors were officers. I got the impression, in "The Sky is Falling", that he was a caseworker back then, thus making AOD a "recent" promotion. So he could have been a caseworker in Civil War times. Diane E # "Hydrogen. So yesterday (Thursday) I went to see him. And as I was leaving, I got off the elevator on the ground floor, and across the elevator, leaning on a wall, was a guy who would win 1st prize if there was ever a "John Dye look alike" contest. I mean, I know that John Dye is just *acting* and that he's not *really* the Angel of Death... but it's still kinda freaky seeing a guy who looks like the AOD in a hospital..... Second: Since my dad is in the hospital, his job of cleaning my church falls into the hands of my mom, sis, and I. So today before I headed off to work, I went in to do some dusting. And in one of the classrooms I found some interesting info about the disciple Andrew. What follows is from the New Invitation's Winter edition (1996-97) for grades 5-6. (It's a Sunday School teaching program) Andrew died a martyr's death on an X-shaped cross at his own request. He felt unworthy to die on the same kind of cross Jesus died on. Sometimes the cross is pictured as two fish, symbolizing that Jesus called Andrew to fish for people (Matthew 4:19). Just thought I'd share those things with you. :-) Love in Christ, Jenn ************************************************************************ E-Mail: sthj @ . .maristc.addy.edu Quote: "Please Mr. Machine? Cuz they'd look *pretty* in the neat period clothes. Yes, this is an excuse for those of us into costuming to fantasize about nice clothes and how lovely our folks would look in them. Completely self-indulgent. But wouldn't Monica be just *dear* with her hair in the ringlets bunched to the sides and an off-the-shoulder dress? Of course, none of this would be appropriate on the battlefield, but maybe they'd have to dress up for a scene....maybe even waltz. Or they could just have an episode at a costume party. I could deal with that. Or at Ren Faire. Hmmm....how else could we get these folks into neat costumes? However one that touches on the Revolutionary War could be fun. Or of the strifes that went on when the Mayflower pilgrims were struggling to create a colony in 1620. Or perhaps the Salem witch trials..... It's entirely possible for there to be historical themes without offending anyone. The War between the States is really the most "touchy" one. It pitted brother against brother, father against son, wife against husband....and it still can cause animosities at this time, 130+ years later. Unfortunately, while the South had a unique and special culture, one to be extolled and remembered, there came with it the travesty of slavery. Most Confederates, like the Patriots during the Revolutionary War felt they were only protecting their homes, their lands....most of those guys didn't own any slaves....We don't need to throw out the baby with the bath water, so to speak! If the NAACP could understand that Southerners are glorifying the culture and not the slavery..anyone that thinks that Southerners are glorifying SLAVERY has a screw loose.....good grief that censure coming from an organization that is PROMOTING it's OWN culture?????? I repeat...Don't throw out the baby with the bath water! If TBAA could do something that would not be judgemental toward either side..it would be fun. It was an era of our history and nothing we can say or do will blot that out. This coming from a daughter of Union soldiers and cousin of many abolitionists........ I think this is a good opportunity to introduce the YKYBWTMTBAAW or "You know you've been watching too much TBAA when...." concept. :-) (This is, btw, stolen shamelessly from the YKYBWTMFKW acronym from the Forever Knight lists--which was probably not the inception of the idea, but is the first place I encountered it.) Someone either commented or posted once that they had had a YKYBWTMTBAAW moment last winter when driving in the snow. They looked off to the side of the road and saw a lit church or church-looking building with the snow swirling around.....and immediately thought, "But where's the dove?" The more I think about it, that ep would've made just as much sense w/o him. I suppose he did add a little suspense to the whole thing, but not near enough to live up to the hype we'd listened to from CBS in the days before the show aired. I almost think, as do others of you, that maybe he *was* sort of tossed in after the fact, but I don't know. I would think if he felt he was being "used" as a ratings gamepiece, he wouldn't have agreed to do the show. It would be really interesting to hear his feelings on the whole thing. Question - is this the only time that there has only been one angel on PL? I think it is. If I remember correctly, in the PL pilot, both Roma and Della were included in the story. Someone please let me know if I'm wrong. :P Take care and God Bless! === Tina _____________________________________________________________________ Sent by RocketMail. If he was AOD, then 'looking out for his son' could have been a request from his latest case, and if he were caseworker, he could have been setting up what we saw (the scene where Penny helped Leonard) or even a further part of the backstory that we didn't see, helping the whole family to heal and move on. It tells how she managed to blend different things from her Irish heritage into the new home (in SLC, of course). I was thinking assigning Monica to the coffee bar, Tess to the complaints desk (although with *her* attitude she might not get any :) ) and Andrew would handle returns. Either that or he would be checkout. (Hey, what are YOU groaning at? :) ) I think the point was raised that it would be difficult to separate John Dye from Andrew, just as it would be difficult to separate Roma from Monica and Della from Tess. I would bet their personalities in real life are very similar to their roles.
